Water or Steam – Will the New Generation Steam LG Washer Spell the End of Dry Cleaning?

For many years there has only really been one choice to make in the laundry room, top or front loader? With brands like Kenmore and LG washer introducing steam washers, you can now dry clean your laundry at home. Will this mean and end to your local dry cleaners?

I’ve rounded up the good points and bad points of the 3 main types of washers available on the market.

Front load washing machines offer several big advantages over top loading models of LG washer. With a lower water and electricity consumption plus the ability to fit easily into smaller laundry spaces, the front loader is already ticking lots of boxes. But if you find it difficult to kneel or bend this is probably not for you as you will find loading and unloading an  front loader tricky if it is floor mounted.

With a capacity of on average 15 pounds of laundry the LG washer front loader is match for the top loader even though it appears much smaller. When buying an LG washer, think about how many people you wash for. A washer with a 10 pound laundry load capacity would be more than enough if you live alone whereas a family would require a much larger machine.

Tests have shown that a mid size, front loading LG washer will on average consume fifteen gallons of water per load, compare that to a top loading model which used 29 gallons . That’s almost half the water used for the same size load in a front loader. The difference is so vast because the top loader needs so much water to cover the laundry in the drum whereas a front loading machine needs much less as the drum is positioned horizontally and as it turns, gravity assists in ensuring all the clothes get dropped back into the water.

Front loading washers have no agitator therefore you have more room for dirty laundry and this enables you to wash bigger loads which in turn should mean you having to do less loads. Having no agitator in a front loading LG washer is also far kinder to your clothes.

Generally, front loading washing machines consume much less power than top loading machines. Independent tests on LG washer show us that a top loader will use twice the amount of electricity that the same size capacity front loading washer will use. Front loaders have a much faster spin cycle and this removes a lot more water which will also save on energy if you must use a dryer.

You’ll find top loaders as a rule will be less expensive to purchase than the majority of front loaders. If you are on a budget you will be able to pick up a top loader for around 500 hundred dollars or under but should you choose to purchase a top loading machine you will make savings long term on your power bill.

If you need your laundry loads down in a hurry then a top loading LG washer is the better option. They generally only take half the time of a front loader, mainly due to the agitator being more efficient as a method of cleaning, although as previously stated, the agitator is also harsher on your clothes. The door of the front loader locks until the cycle has completed so it’s not possible to open the door and add in any extra laundry but an advantage to the top loading washer is you can simply open the lid and add more once the wash has started .

Using the pause function on front loading steam washers does however allow you to open the door because there is no water to come out. I got the chance to test a load of laundry in an LG Washer and the steam mode did do a much better job of getting marks out of dirty clothes than on just the regular wash mode, you do have to check though that the items you are laundering can withstand the steam temperature. The steam option also uses considerably less water than traditional settings. The price of steam enabled washers is quite pricey compared to regular washers but as they are still relatively new I’m hoping that they will eventually be priced more competitively in time.
